it's so funny how i suddenly want to turn all the "scripts" i'm writing into feature films.
this semester i am taking seven classes:
CC
Frontiers (yes)
Intermediate Chinese
British Modernist Fiction
Film Production
Script Analysis
Beginner's Fiction Workshop
i've been reading heart of darkness on the subway and i fucking love this novel(la) so it's been great reviving said love. i think chinua achebe needs to read it one more time, give it a chance. the words "black" and "savage" are so fucking loaded, and yes, sometimes conrad does use them with prejudice, which hurts. but his overall message is nothing like achebe suggests. i can't wait to get to class with this text. ooh. i said text. i'm in academic mode.
i can't sleep. i have to wake up at 7am, i can't sleep.

I can't sleep either, so I'm reading random links from facebook. (nice blog!) I liked HofD too, Achebe does need to change his mind, but I think to some degree he might have already. I met him at Bard College through a friend, he's getting on in years, sort of hard of hearing, but he said something strange. That colonialism had given him what is most important in his life - his language and his ability to express himself and his education and that we should all take advantage of our education. So I don't quite know how to fit that in with his essay, but the 88 version is alread more mild than the 70s one. I don't think Conrad was racist ... his letters to Casement are pretty forward on the issue, but it's difficult to explain the HD language away, I don't know..
