Because I am going through that 'bored of all music' phase (again), you get to hear all about it. Sure, my favourite genres are still folk/anti-folk, kings-of-leon-y rock (southern indie?), british "stuff", synthesizer-charged-whatever, experimental orchestral music, classic rock classics, and most of all beautiful-lyric-drenched anything ... but I need new stuff, new new stuff. I am bored.
Today I finally heard Ok Go's new album and it fucking sucks. Somewhere between 2002 and 2006 (when I stopped listening) they became really poppy and crossed the fine-line between smart-stupid pop and just watered down pop. God. Ew. They traded in their wit for a large myspace following. Another list to the bands The O.C. butchered.
Today I was also forced to admit to myself that the Regina Spektor that is my soultwin is the Regina of Songs and 11:11 + her live stuff - not of 'Begin To Hope'. She needs to ditch the band, ditch the electronic stuff, ditch the anything, anf just go back to her, her piano, and her drumstick. Honestly, I feel like all the 13-year-old fans Begin To Hope brought along are making her the next Christina Aguilera. She's not even anti-folk anymore, she's pop. It is killing me to admit it, but ever since Sire came along she is becoming less Regina and more generic female songstress with quirks. Why?!
I hate that. When musicians get larger fanbases and water down their music. Like when Arctic Monkeys got all the NME coverage and their debut was so much more methodical than Beneath The Boardwalk. Same with The Secret Machines and The Futureheads. Their debuts slay me with awe but their sophmore albums just had them succumbing to larger fanbases. I don't get it. Why water yourself down when you're already so famous? It makes feel weird saying these bands are among my favourites when I only like their first/first few albums. NME needs to die. I hate it when they pick up bands I like and make me seem like another NME drone. Eww!
This Friday I'm seeing Bob Schneider at Knitting Factory! I'm not the biggest fan right now, but I was in Year 11!! 16-year-old me is having her heart filled up :)
I need something to shock me.
I stayed up all night and haven't started my essay! Ahhh! By 12pm I will be revising 'Tricky Culture'. Please?
P.S. I hate music snobs. Really. No matter how great of a person you are, if you like to judge people on their music taste, like bands because they're obscure, or diss bands because they're big enough to play arenas ... then I can never get along with you the way I'd like to. Please. Stop being a close-minded, image-focused fuck.
