playing with contrast and (non)colour and movement.
saw:
KIDS: really really real. very good at creating vile characters who, because of their youth, seem like they should be more innocent. very other-side-of-the-90s: grime, dirt, and HIV. chloe sevigny is very beautiful because she sits on the fine line between ugly and pretty. it's great to see a movie that gets a lot of feeling out of you. though i felt a lot of it was extreme suspension of disbelief, which was accompanied with the knowledge that oh no it is very very real. love the grainy film, shaky camera, and saturated colours. a tense film.
FERRIS BUELLER'S DAY OFF: john hughes knows how to make movies that embody everything people hate and others love about the mainstream. and he does what he does well. but when people call him a genius i start to gag. no no. the breakfast club is a great great movie but this one? ugh. they tried so hard to make ferris' character lovable but he was pretty much an asshole. and cocky. and not cute. and the acting was overdone (as usual). couldn't get into it at all. makes use of every teen comedy formula out there.
I still cannot sleep. going to watch the justin rice shorts etc on youtube.
PS:
the biggest epiphany i had during my one year of ivy league education:
( ) = parentheses
[ ] = brackets
oh america.
