Since this year was such an awesome year for music, I am literally getting a headache from trying to decide who lies in the top 10. So! The close contenders include Jeffrey Lewis, The Felice Brothers, Razorlight, Larrikin Love, Belle & Sebastian, O'Death, Arctic Monkeys, Tokyo Police Club, and The Long Blondes (+ I also haven't truly listened to the new TV on the Radio, Dresden Dolls, Catch 22, Fiery Furnaces, The Who, Morrissey, or Black Lips)
BUT! all in all...
THE BEST ALBUM OF 2006 IS...
Because we all know I have a penchant from 9-minute songs, cracking/droning voices, and instruments picked out of your backyard - like kettles, aeolian harps, marrachas, bongo drums, & spoons ... RAW MUSIC! This album is it. As far as music that runs through you and creates an atmosphere, Akron are top banana (yeah!). Real music by way of tribal chanting, uncontrolled clapping, harmonizing, but best of all: improv!
I believe they know how to drug you with music. Lyrical & musical repetitions are pure poetry, their musical juxtaposition is used for literary effect. Maybe they're just English majors flying high. They control silence, they control sound.
Top 2 tracks are Blessing Force & The Rider (Dolphin Song) but all 7 songs are masterpieces (and I am still beating myself for missing them twice but Agent Orange was so worth it!)
Two words: Calculated Craziness (awesome)
